Where the Pacific Meets Wine Country
Do you ever play Jeopardy? OK, here’s one for you: A charming California beach town that has world-class wineries just minutes away.
The question is: What is Pismo Beach?
You will not find this in Sonoma or Napa. You can get up (at a leisurely hour if you want), step out the door, and take a refreshing stroll on a clean, white sand beach. And when you are ready, you can be in an excellent tasting room in under ten minutes, no exaggeration.
Celebrating Wine, Waves & Beyond
We do not take our good fortune for granted! In fact, we celebrate it at the Wine, Waves & Beyond Longboard Surf Classic, held this year April 30 through May 4.
The party begins Wednesday April 30 with a great surf movie, Missing, starring ASP World Champion Mick Fanning. You will circle the globe with Fanning as he looks for the best surf from Africa to Central America to Spain. Actually, you’ll be in the classic Fremont Theater in downtown SLO wishing you were with Mick, but you can get up the next morning and get out on the waves in Pismo. And the closing event on Sunday, May 4 returns to the surf with a longboard contest off Pismo pier.
In case you’re wondering what happened to the ‘wine’ part of this event, check out the Rabobank Barrel to Barrel wine and food tasting Friday evening. Over 40 wineries and breweries will be on hand to give you a lot of ways to pair tastes of the local cuisine with some of our best liquid products.
It’s a Benefit for AmpSurf
Maybe the best thing of all is that your participation in Wine, Waves & Beyond will help fund AmpSurf. For 10 years, AmpSurf has been helping people with disabilities and their families gain a sense of accomplishment through adaptive surfing and other outdoor activities. A lot of the people who’ve reconnected with joy through surfing are vets returning from a war zone carrying scars of many kinds, sometimes with missing limbs.
By the way, if you are in Pismo on Saturday, May 3, AmpSurf is putting on the first Learn to Surf Clinic of the year. This will be on the south side of the Pier, a couple hundred yards up the beach from the SeaVenture, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. (according to the AmpSurf calendar – check that out).
The only way to describe the vibe at Wine, Waves and Beyond is “laid back.” The surf culture is strong on the Central Coast, and it carries into our wine as well. Slow down and enjoy life!
