Once Upon a Resolution

POSTED ON January 6th, 2012 - by lauren

Oh, the Resolution.  How many of you make them?  Well, actually the bigger question—How many of you keep them?

I actually did fairly well this past year. I resolved to read more, which I have succeeded at, maybe not as much as I would like to, but I would say the resolution was achieved.  I also resolved to exercise more.  I would like to know who didn’t have this resolution?  And really, do we need to go into the details of whether I succeeded on this one or not?  Well, let’s say it is part of my 2012 resolution plan as well!

Contemplating my choices for this year, I started to wonder how this whole resolution thing came about.  My curiosity brought enlightened me with a little bit of a history lesson.

Did you know that the New Year’s Resolution goes all the way back to 153 B.C. when Janus, a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the calendar.  With two faces, Janus could look back on past events and forward to the future. He became the ancient symbol for resolutions.  Romans started to look for forgiveness from their enemies and exchanged gifts of branches and coins.  At midnight on December 31st, the Romans imagined Janus looking back at the old year and forward to the new one.

So, what do you resolve to do?  Have you looked backwards, then forwards, reflected and contemplated?  Have you made your resolutions?  And then back to that bigger question, will you achieve them and keep to them?  Do resolutions keep us focused and instill a sense of willpower in us, or are they just a silly tradition?

I resolve to find out.
