Oceano Dunes History

The sand dunes of Oceano are recognized as the most extensive coastal dunes remaining in California by scientists, conservationists, government agencies and the public. The dunes are composed of materials carried down from various rivers and creeks and deposited in the area by ocean currents. The prevailing ocean winds then shape the dunes into what we see today.

The Chumash and Dunites used to walk these very Dunes. Learn of these amazing people and see what attracted both cultures to this beautiful area. The Nature Center located at the entrance of the Oceano Campground has more information.

Adhere to all rules and regulations and always remember safety first as you set out on your Oceano Dune adventure.
