Pismo Preserve Nearing Completion

Although this sounds like a development, in this case it’s just the opposite. The Pismo Preserve is what will happen if the County of San Luis Obispo ponies up $400k to complete the purchase of a 900-acre cattle ranch overlooking Pismo Beach. If the deal goes through, there will be no development as usual on the site.

Why should you care?

We fully understand that you don’t come to the SeaVenture just because it’s a nice beachfront hotel and resort. It IS a nice hotel and resort, but you visit us because Pismo Beach is an amazing, clean beach in an unspoiled semi-rural area, with a charming uncrowded town attached. It’s beautiful, and it’s yours for the asking.

So when we get a chance to keep a big part of our surrounding area in its (mostly) natural state, it’s a good thing for all of us. There’s a lot of pressure to develop more of our County, and we understand that. When we find the water resources to maintain a development, we are usually supportive. But keeping our rural wine country and beach thing going is what makes Pismo such a special place.

Take a look at Pismo from the proposed Preserve in the photo we lifted from the San Luis Obispo Tribune.

A picture’s worth a 1000 words, in fact. This area is criss-crossed by small roads and trails, and is likely to be quite accessible. The project has been led by the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo (www.lcslo.org) which has raised most of the $12 million needed to buy the property (including a big $8 million chunk from state agencies). LCSLO says the ranch will be open to the public free of charge beginning next summer if the deal closes. It will be maintained by a $1.2 million endowment that is included in the deal.

You can see from the photo that this special land is not far from Pismo Beach. It will give you yet another great thing to do the next time you visit.
