Beyond Wine and Waves
Wine and waves are pretty good as they are, but you can get even more at the annual Wine, Waves, and Beyond—Central Coast Surf Classic held in Pismo and other south San Luis Obispo locations. This is one annual event worth repeating because it gets better every year.
Where else can you do these things in one event: Drink fabulous wine and beer. Eat scrumptious food. Listen to super live music. Watch Pro-Am surfing contests, and watch surfing demos. Relive surfing history with a VW cruise and competition (ride your own bus or bug if you want). Kick back on the big white sand beach of Pismo and watch the action.
Have Fun and Help Out Too
Wine, Waves and Beyond is loaded with fun, but its goal is to benefit a couple local and state organizations dedicated to making life better. That’s why Boutique Hotels, which owns SeaVenture, is a prime sponsor. Net proceeds from events will be donated to one or both of these organizations:
- gleanSLO: This program of the Food Bank Coalition of SLO County supports ‘gleaners’ who rescue produce from farmers, markets and backyard gardeners to get wholesome fresh produce to people in need.
- Still Frothy: A simple idea makes Still Frothy work—getting kids off the couch and on to a surfboard can liberate them from the artificial screen part of the time as they learn the joy of surfing. Still Frothy presents a two-day Surf Festival with the second day for a Pro-Am contest.
Things to Do
The WW&B Surf Classic starts with Big Waves on the Big Screen at 6:30 pm, Wednesday the 27th of April. Watch great surfing movies on the big Fremont Theater screen in San Luis Obispo. The Fremont is an art deco throwback to the golden era of cinema, a treat in itself.
Barrel to Barrel is a wine- and food-tasting extravaganza on the lawn with the endless view at the Cliffs Resort. Join us on Friday evening, April 29 from 5 to 8 pm to enjoy live music with the wines of over 40 wineries and tastes of the best of local cuisine.
A very special wine makers’ dinner is offered beginning with a reception at 6 pm Saturday at the incomparable Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort. Four top local chefs have created a delightful dinner with delicious wine and food pairings, showcasing a comparison between top French wines and wines from Culton Winery. Seating is very limited for this special dinner.
Surfing competition heats up on Sunday, May 1, with men’s and women’s longboard and shortboard contests (men’s by invitation only – this will be top quality surfing). There will be a contest for International Adaptive Athletes. Maybe the most entertaining surfers will be in the Winemaker/Brewmaster Division (I’m sure there will be no drinking and surfing!).
For a terrific FREE day, bring your beach chair on Sunday and just enjoy the scene. Treat your ears to music by Proxima Parada and The Kicks. Treat your taste buds to goodies from the finest food trucks on the Central Coast. These events will be held at the Pismo Pier, which promises the perfect California experience.
Finally, what would the California surfing scene be without a VW microbus? In the parking lot next to the SeaVenture Beach House you’ll find bugs and busses to your heart’s content. Bring your own Bug—register here through the Central Coast VW Club! The meet and greet starts at 9:30 am on May 1, and continues with a cruise through Pismo at 10:15, ending with awards at 3 pm.
